As a first year student at African Leadership Academy, Lidya was chosen to attend the 2016 Georgetown Model United Nations Conference in Qatar. Using the research experience she gained there, she served as the Committee Chair of the Pan-African parliament at the African Leadership Academy Model African Union (ALAMAU) conference held in March, 2017. During summer 2016, Lidya, along with her two fellow Ethiopian ALA students, organized an Entrepreneurship camp for Refugees in Ethiopia in collaboration with the US embassy in Ethiopia and US mission to the AU. At her previous school, she was a representative for Let Girls Lead (LGL), a global movement of leaders to empower girls through girl-centered advocacy.
As a Hesburgh-Yusko scholar at the University of Notre Dame class of 2021, Lidya aspires to continue coupling her love for science and passion for women empowerment. She hopes to research and help to establish ways of promoting equal opportunities for girls/women especially in Africa.
